Every device on your network talks to the internet through one gateway. A firewall decides what gets in and what stays out, so choosing and configuring it well is one of the most important security decisions a business makes.
Start with what you need to protect
- How many users and sites you have, and how many will grow in the next two years
- Whether staff connect remotely and need a secure VPN
- Which services must stay online, such as email, accounting or point of sale
- Any rules your industry or your customers expect you to follow
Features worth paying for
Look for stateful inspection, intrusion prevention, web filtering, VPN support and clear logging with alerts. Throughput matters too: a firewall that is too small becomes a bottleneck the day you add video calls or cloud backups.
Integration matters more than the badge
A powerful firewall with poor rules protects very little. The best results come from designing the rules around your network, testing them with a proof of concept, and documenting everything so the next engineer can understand it.
